Oriental is the most well-known town in Pamlico County and is often called the "Sailing Capital of North Carolina" - rumor has it there are more sailboats than people! Located on the ICW, it's a favaorite stop for boaters as well as a favorite gathering place for the community. In many neighborhoods, masts peek over the rooftops where sailboats rock quietly at the back door. Our marinas are home to boats of every kind. We have regattas and fishing tournaments, an active community theatre, and art galleries showcasing local talent. Minnesott Beach is home to our country club, with golf, tennis, a pool, and riverfront condominiums.

Historic New Bern is a short drive (or boat ride) away, featuring a beautifully restored downtown district with restaurants, galleries, and shops. The fabulous beaches of the Crystal Coast, Beaufort's fine waterfront district, and Morehead City's offshore fishing fleet are about an hour's drive (including a ferry ride if you wish!). The Cape Hatteras National Seashore and wonderful Ocracoke Island are about thirty miles by water across the Pamlico Sound.
